Ear Mites
Ear mites are tiny parasites that live in the ear canal, feeding on skin debris and wax. In dogs and cats, the species involved is typically Otodectes cynotis, a mite that can move between animals in close contact and only very rarely causes brief skin irritation in people who handle heavily infested pets — it cannot establish or complete its life cycle on human skin. The mites themselves are rarely visible to the naked eye, but their presence often triggers irritation and a characteristic dark, crumbly discharge. Owners most commonly notice persistent head shaking, scratching at the ears, or a dark material that accumulates inside the ear. These signs can appear similar to other ear conditions, and not all itchy ears are caused by mites. Young animals and those in multi-pet households tend to be affected more often, though mites can appear at any age. The signs of ear mite infestation can develop within a few weeks of exposure, though the timeline varies between individuals. Some animals show intense irritation soon after the mites establish themselves, whilst others develop only mild signs that may go unnoticed for longer periods. Without intervention, the population of mites can expand over weeks to months, and the ongoing irritation may lead to secondary changes in the skin lining the ear canal. The severity of signs does not always match the number of mites present, as individual sensitivity plays a significant role.

Early signals
Head shaking or tilting
The animal may shake its head more frequently than usual, or hold one ear lower or at an angle. This reflects irritation inside the ear canal and is often one of the first changes an owner notices.
Scratching at the ears
The pet may scratch at one or both ears with a hind paw, sometimes persistently. The scratching may be focused around the base of the ear or the opening of the canal, and can occasionally be vigorous enough to cause small injuries to the skin.
Dark, crumbly discharge
A dry, dark brown or black material may accumulate inside the ear canal, often compared in appearance to coffee grounds. This discharge is a mixture of mite waste, ear wax, dried blood, and shed skin cells, and is considered a characteristic sign of ear mite infestation.
Odour from the ear
The ear may develop a distinct smell, sometimes described as musty or unpleasant. This can result from the accumulation of debris and the breakdown of skin cells, though a strong or foul odour may also suggest secondary bacterial or yeast involvement.
Later signals
Visible redness or swelling
The skin lining the ear canal may become inflamed, appearing red, thickened, or swollen when examined. This reflects ongoing irritation and the body's response to the presence of the mites and their waste products.
Hair loss or scabbing around the ear
Repeated scratching or rubbing may cause patches of hair loss on the outer ear or around the base, sometimes with small scabs or raw areas. This is a secondary effect of the animal's attempts to relieve the discomfort.
Reduced hearing or responsiveness
In cases where the ear canal becomes significantly obstructed by discharge or inflammation, the animal may appear less responsive to sounds or may not react to calls from certain directions. This is not a direct effect of the mites themselves but rather a consequence of the accumulated material and swelling.

Diagnosis typically begins with the history and a description of what the owner has observed, followed by examination of the ear canals. In many cases the appearance of the discharge and the pattern of irritation suggest mites, but confirmation usually requires visualising the parasites themselves or ruling out other causes of similar signs. The approach may vary depending on how cooperative the animal is and whether sedation is needed to examine the ears thoroughly.

Management of ear mites typically involves killing the parasites, addressing secondary infections if present, and reducing inflammation to restore comfort. Different products and approaches vary in how they are applied, how many treatments are needed, and how well they address the full mite life cycle. What works well for one household or animal may be less practical for another, depending on the number of pets, ease of application, and individual tolerance of handling.
Topical acaricides applied to the ear canal
Drops or ointments containing compounds that kill mites are placed directly into the ear canal, often after cleaning away debris. Treatment is usually repeated over several weeks to cover the mite life cycle, as eggs may not be affected by a single application. Some formulations also contain anti-inflammatory or antimicrobial agents to address secondary changes.
Trade-offs: This method allows targeted delivery but requires handling the ears, which some animals tolerate poorly. Effectiveness depends on adequate contact between the product and the mites, and heavy wax or inflammation may reduce penetration. Multiple applications can be burdensome in multi-pet households.
Systemic spot-on or oral parasiticides
Products applied to the skin or given by mouth distribute through the body and kill mites when they feed. Some formulations are effective against a broad range of parasites and may require only one or two doses to resolve the infestation. These avoid the need for direct ear handling in animals that find it stressful.
Trade-offs: Systemic products may not address secondary infections or inflammation within the ear, so additional treatments may still be needed. The timing of repeat doses must align with the mite life cycle, and not all products are licensed for use in very young animals or certain species.
Ear cleaning and debris removal
Flushing or gentle cleaning removes accumulated wax, mite debris, and discharge, which can improve comfort and allow better contact between treatments and the canal lining. Cleaning may be performed in the practice under sedation if the ears are very painful or the animal uncooperative, or at home with suitable solutions if the animal tolerates it.
Trade-offs: Cleaning alone does not kill mites but can be an important part of management when combined with acaricides. Over-vigorous cleaning or use of inappropriate solutions may cause further irritation, and some animals find the process distressing.
Treatment of all contact animals
Because ear mites spread readily between animals in close contact, treatment is often extended to other dogs, cats, or ferrets in the household, even if they show no signs. This reduces the chance of reinfestation and helps break the cycle of transmission.
Trade-offs: Treating apparently healthy animals adds cost and effort, and not all owners find this practical, particularly in large groups. Some animals may harbour mites without obvious signs, making it difficult to know when the environment is truly clear.
Management of secondary infections
When bacterial or yeast infections complicate the picture, additional antimicrobial treatments may be used alongside acaricides. Trade-offs: Antimicrobial therapy does not treat the underlying mite infestation, and signs may recur if mites are not cleared. Overuse of antimicrobials without clear indication is a consideration in any treatment plan.

Some animals carry mites with minimal signs, particularly adults or those with less pronounced immune responses. The amount of discharge and the degree of irritation vary considerably between individuals, and light infestations may produce subtle changes that are easy to overlook.

Visible improvement often occurs before all life stages of the mite are eliminated. Eggs and immature stages may survive initial treatment, and stopping too early can allow the infestation to re-establish. Ear mites can create similar conditions inside the ear canal, and secondary yeast overgrowth is one of the complications that may develop when mite infestation persists.
Flea Allergy Dermatitis
Flea allergy dermatitis and ear mites are both ectoparasitic conditions that can trigger allergic-type inflammation in susceptible animals, and both are common in settings where parasite control is inconsistent. An animal with one parasitic problem may be at higher risk of others, and itching from either condition can prompt scratching that complicates the clinical picture.
Once the immediate irritation has settled, it can be useful to consider whether other factors contributed to the ear environment or whether ongoing preventive measures make sense for a particular household.
