Exercise intolerance
Owners may observe exercise intolerance in their pet.
Various conditions
This symptom can occur in multiple conditions and warrants further assessment.
Cardiac Disease
Conditions that reduce the heart's ability to deliver oxygenated blood during exertion — including pericardial effusion, atrial fibrillation, and congenital defects such as patent ductus arteriosus, pulmonic stenosis, or tricuspid valve dysplasia — commonly present as reluctance to continue exercising rather than obvious distress at rest. Young dogs with congenital defects may show intolerance from early exercise, while acquired disease tends to appear in middle-aged and older dogs.
Airway and Respiratory Disease
Tracheal collapse, seen mainly in small and toy breeds such as Yorkshire Terriers and Pomeranians, and other airway or pleural space conditions like chylothorax or eosinophilic bronchopneumopathy limit the volume of air reaching the lungs during exercise. Affected dogs tire earlier than expected and may cough or produce a honking sound alongside their reduced stamina.
Neuromuscular and Collapse Disorders
An inherited form of exercise-induced collapse is well recognised in young, otherwise healthy Labrador Retrievers, causing sudden hindlimb weakness after several minutes of high-intensity activity. Acquired neuromuscular conditions such as myasthenia gravis produce a similar pattern of weakness that worsens with continued exertion and improves with rest.
Musculoskeletal and Orthopaedic Disease
Osteoarthritis, hip or elbow dysplasia, and cruciate ligament disease make movement uncomfortable, so affected dogs slow down, lag behind, or stop exercising sooner than they used to. This is especially common in large and giant breeds and in dogs beyond middle age, and often develops gradually enough that owners initially attribute it to normal ageing.
Body Condition and Fitness
Carrying excess weight increases the mechanical and metabolic cost of exercise, so overweight dogs fatigue sooner and recover more slowly than lean dogs of the same breed. Deconditioning after a period of reduced activity has a similar, reversible effect and is one of the more benign explanations for a drop in exercise tolerance.

Conditions commonly associated
Tracheal Collapse
Reduced airway diameter during activity limits exercise capacity in dogs with tracheal collapse.
Pericardial Effusion
Compromised cardiac function reduces the heart's ability to meet increased oxygen demands during activity.
Atrial Fibrillation
An erratic, often fast heart rhythm reduces how efficiently the heart pumps, so exercise is tolerated less well than before.
Chylothorax
Reduced lung capacity from fluid in the chest limits how much oxygen can be taken up during activity.
Eosinophilic Bronchopneumopathy
Narrowed, inflamed airways reduce the amount of air reaching the lungs during activity, so exercise is cut short.
Exercise-Induced Collapse
Affected dogs tire unusually quickly during vigorous exercise, as the underlying muscle-control defect interferes with sustained activity.
Patent Ductus Arteriosus
An abnormal vessel diverting blood away from the body places extra strain on the heart, so affected puppies tire more quickly than littermates.
Pulmonic Stenosis
A narrowed pulmonary valve forces the right side of the heart to work harder to push blood to the lungs, limiting the stamina available for exercise.
Tricuspid Valve Dysplasia
A poorly functioning tricuspid valve limits how efficiently blood returns to the heart, so exertion becomes tiring more quickly than normal.
