Gradual lens opacity

Age-Related Nuclear Sclerosis
From around eight years of age, the lens fibres in dogs compress and increase in density, producing a faint bluish-grey haze across the centre of the eye that develops gradually and symmetrically in both eyes. This is a normal ageing change rather than disease and has minimal effect on vision, with the retina still clearly visible on examination through the hazy lens.
Diabetic Cataract
In dogs with diabetes mellitus, elevated blood glucose draws fluid into the lens through an osmotic process that disrupts its fibres, and this can progress from mild haze to complete opacity within days to weeks. It is one of the most common causes of rapidly progressive lens change in middle-aged and older dogs and frequently affects both eyes at a similar pace.
Hereditary and Breed-Related Cataract
A number of breeds, including the Labrador Retriever, Cocker Spaniel, Boston Terrier and Poodle, carry inherited predispositions to cataract formation that can appear in young adulthood or progress steadily through middle age. These cataracts often start as small, well-defined opacities within the lens before gradually enlarging over months to years.
Senile Cataract
Separate from the haze of normal ageing, some older dogs develop true age-related cataracts in which lens proteins degenerate and clump, producing denser, more localised areas of opacity that can progressively affect vision. These tend to appear later than hereditary forms and progress more slowly than diabetic cataracts.
Uveitis-Related Cataract
Chronic inflammation inside the eye, whatever its original cause, alters the fluid bathing the lens and can lead to secondary cataract formation over a period of weeks to months. The opacity in these cases is often preceded by a history of eye redness or discomfort, rather than developing in an otherwise quiet eye.

Diabetes Mellitus in Dogs
Diabetes mellitus in dogs can cause gradual lens opacity through a process in which persistently elevated blood glucose leads to sorbitol accumulation within the lens, drawing water inward and disrupting the normal clarity of lens fibres. This change may develop over weeks to months and can affect one or both eyes.
Diabetes Mellitus in Cats
Diabetes mellitus in cats can lead to gradual lens opacity through similar metabolic changes, where chronic hyperglycaemia alters the osmotic balance within the lens and contributes to structural changes in lens proteins. The progression tends to be slower in cats than in dogs, and the onset may be subtle.
Canine Cognitive Dysfunction
Canine cognitive dysfunction may be observed alongside gradual lens opacity in older dogs, as both age-related lens changes and neurodegenerative processes can progress concurrently over time. The lens opacity itself does not cause cognitive decline, but the two conditions often share the context of advancing age.
Feline Cognitive Dysfunction
Feline cognitive dysfunction and gradual lens opacity may both be observed in ageing cats, reflecting parallel age-related changes in ocular and neurological tissues. These processes are distinct, but their overlap in timing can influence how cats navigate their environment.
