Loss of balance
Owners may observe loss of balance in their pet.
Various conditions
This symptom can occur in multiple conditions and warrants further assessment.
Vestibular Ataxia
Dysfunction of the balance organs in the inner ear or their connections in the brainstem produces a characteristic loss of balance with leaning, circling or falling toward one side, usually paired with a head tilt and abnormal eye movements. Causes range from ear infection to idiopathic vestibular syndrome, particularly in older dogs and cats.
Cerebellar Ataxia
Degenerative, inflammatory or congenital disease affecting the cerebellum disrupts fine coordination of movement, producing an exaggerated, high-stepping gait without the leaning or head tilt typical of vestibular disease. Certain breeds carry a recognised predisposition to cerebellar degeneration, including the Kerry Blue Terrier, where signs typically start in puppyhood, and the American Staffordshire Terrier, where onset is usually in adulthood, most often between four and six years of age.
Spinal Cord and Nerve Disease
Compression or degeneration of the spinal cord reduces the proprioceptive feedback the brain needs to coordinate limb placement, producing weakness, knuckling and an unsteady, swaying gait that is often more pronounced in the hind limbs. Intervertebral disc disease affects chondrodystrophic breeds such as Dachshunds and Cocker Spaniels, while degenerative myelopathy follows a slow, progressive course in older German Shepherd Dogs and related breeds.
Age-Related Musculoskeletal and Cognitive Decline
In senior dogs and cats, a combination of joint stiffness, reduced muscle mass and mild cognitive change can produce a generally unsteady, hesitant gait without a single identifiable neurological lesion. This forms a normal part of ageing in many pets and tends to progress very gradually rather than appear suddenly.
Metabolic or Toxic Causes
Low blood glucose, electrolyte disturbances, or exposure to certain substances such as permethrin-based spot-on products in cats can impair normal nerve and muscle function throughout the body, producing generalised weakness and incoordination rather than a localised neurological deficit. Onset is often relatively rapid and can fluctuate over the course of a day.

Conditions commonly associated
Vestibular Disease
Vestibular dysfunction directly impairs balance, causing stumbling, falling, or inability to walk straight.
Intervertebral Disc Disease in Dogs
Intervertebral disc disease can cause loss of balance when disc material compresses the spinal cord, disrupting the nerve signals that coordinate movement and spatial awareness. The degree of imbalance often correlates with the location and severity of spinal cord compression.
Degenerative Myelopathy
Degenerative myelopathy involves progressive damage to the white matter of the spinal cord, which disrupts the pathways responsible for proprioception and coordinated movement. Loss of balance in this condition typically begins in the hindlimbs and worsens gradually over months.
Otitis Externa in Dogs
Otitis externa can cause loss of balance when inflammation extends to the middle or inner ear structures that control equilibrium and spatial orientation. Head tilting and circling often accompany the balance disturbance in these cases.
Feline Cognitive Dysfunction
Feline cognitive dysfunction may involve changes in spatial awareness and motor control as brain function declines with age. Affected cats can appear disoriented in familiar spaces and may misjudge distances when moving or jumping.
Canine Cognitive Dysfunction
Canine cognitive dysfunction can affect the brain regions responsible for spatial navigation and motor coordination, leading to episodes where dogs appear unsteady or struggle to navigate familiar environments. This loss of balance tends to be intermittent and may worsen in unfamiliar settings or low light.
Idiopathic Generalised Tremor Syndrome
Continuous tremor running through the whole body makes it harder to hold a steady stance, so balance can look precarious even standing still.
