Mammary gland enlargement

Owners may observe mammary gland enlargement in their pet, which can present in various ways depending on the underlying cause.

Reproductive

Mammary tissue responds to hormonal changes throughout the reproductive cycle, during pregnancy, and in false pregnancy. Oestrogen and progesterone can stimulate gland development and milk production even in the absence of true pregnancy.

Neoplastic

Mammary tumours can develop in both dogs and cats, often presenting as firm or irregular swellings within one or more glands. These may be benign or malignant, and their behaviour tends to vary with the animal's age, reproductive history, and species.

Infectious or inflammatory

Mastitis, an infection or inflammation of the mammary tissue, can occur in lactating animals or occasionally in those that are not nursing. The gland may become swollen, warm, and painful, sometimes accompanied by systemic signs such as lethargy or reduced appetite.

Hormonal or metabolic

Conditions affecting the endocrine system, such as ovarian cysts or hormone-secreting tumours elsewhere in the body, can stimulate mammary tissue in unexpected ways. Certain medications, particularly those with hormonal activity, may have similar effects.

Developmental or anatomical

Some animals may have naturally more prominent mammary tissue, or asymmetry between glands, which can become more noticeable with weight change or age. Occasionally, swelling reflects fluid accumulation or tissue changes unrelated to the gland itself, such as local oedema or trauma.

Why timing matters

Early observation

When mammary enlargement is first noticed, the context often helps narrow the possibilities. In an intact female, recent heat cycles or behavioural changes may point towards hormonal influence. In a lactating animal, sudden swelling paired with discomfort or changes in the puppies' or kittens' nursing behaviour can suggest an infectious process. Subtle asymmetry or a single firm area may prompt closer observation over the following days.

Later presentation

If enlargement persists beyond the expected window for a hormonal cycle, or recurs in a pattern that does not align with reproductive events, the underlying picture may shift. Growths that were initially small and soft may change in texture, size, or number over weeks to months. Persistent swelling in a spayed animal, or in one with no recent hormonal triggers, often warrants a different lens than transient changes tied to the oestrous cycle.

Mammary changes can follow various trajectories depending on the cause. Hormonally driven swelling typically resolves within a few weeks as progesterone levels decline, though some animals experience repeated episodes with each cycle. Tumours may grow slowly over months, or in some cases more rapidly, and their character can evolve in ways that are difficult to predict from initial presentation alone. Infectious processes tend to declare themselves more quickly, often within days, though chronic low-grade inflammation can persist if the underlying trigger remains unaddressed.

When to explore further

If the swelling persists for more than a few weeks without clear hormonal context, or recurs in a pattern that seems disconnected from reproductive cycles.

If the enlargement is accompanied by changes in colour, warmth, pain on touch, or discharge from the nipple, or if the animal appears unwell in other ways.

If a discrete lump or irregular area can be felt within the gland, particularly if it grows, changes texture, or appears in multiple sites over time.

If the animal is spayed or male, where hormonal explanations are less straightforward, or if there is a history of hormone-based medication or conditions affecting other body systems.

If the enlargement interferes with movement, comfort, or normal behaviour, or if there are concurrent signs such as weight loss, changes in appetite, or lethargy that do not resolve.

Mammary enlargement gains meaning when considered alongside the animal's reproductive status, recent history, and any accompanying signs. Observing the pattern over a week or two can often clarify whether the change is transient or evolving. A physical examination can distinguish between diffuse swelling, discrete masses, and changes in skin or underlying tissue, and this information shapes the path forward. These observations, shared in context, help build a fuller picture.
