Persistent lameness
Owners may observe persistent lameness in their pet.

Degenerative Joint Disease
Osteoarthritis develops as joint cartilage wears down over time, often secondary to an earlier developmental or traumatic joint problem, and produces a lameness that is typically worse after rest and eases with gentle movement. It is most common in older, larger-breed dogs but can appear earlier in breeds predisposed to hip or elbow dysplasia. The lameness tends to be slowly progressive rather than sudden in onset.
Developmental Orthopaedic Disease
Hip dysplasia and osteochondritis dissecans arise from abnormal joint or cartilage development during growth, producing lameness that often first appears between four and twelve months of age in large and giant breeds such as the Labrador Retriever, German Shepherd, and Great Dane. Affected joints may show reduced range of motion or a grating sensation on manipulation. These conditions frequently predispose the same joint to earlier-onset osteoarthritis later in life.
Ligamentous and Soft Tissue Injury
Cranial cruciate ligament disease is one of the most common causes of hindlimb lameness in dogs, arising either from gradual degeneration of the ligament or a single traumatic tear, and typically produces a persistent, weight-bearing lameness with a stiff-legged gait. Overweight, middle-aged dogs and certain breeds such as the Labrador Retriever and Rottweiler are over-represented. Milder muscular or tendon strains from exercise can produce a similar but usually shorter-lived lameness that settles with rest.
Neoplastic Bone Disease
Osteosarcoma and other bone or joint tumours produce a lameness that is often progressive and poorly responsive to rest, sometimes accompanied by localised swelling or pain on palpation of the affected limb. Large and giant breeds, including the Rottweiler, Great Dane, and Irish Wolfhound, carry a well-documented predisposition, and the disease typically affects middle-aged to older dogs. The distal radius, proximal humerus, and distal femur are the most frequently affected sites.
Neurological or Spinal Disease
Nerve root compression or spinal cord disease can produce a lameness that mimics an orthopaedic problem but originates from disrupted nerve signalling to the limb rather than the joint or bone itself. Intervertebral disc disease is a recognised cause in chondrodystrophic breeds such as the Dachshund, and affected dogs may show other subtle signs such as knuckling, reduced conscious placement, or spinal pain. Distinguishing this from a primary orthopaedic cause usually requires a combined orthopaedic and neurological examination.

Progressive limping that worsens over time is often the first sign of bone tumour development.
Osteoarthritis in Dogs
Osteoarthritis in dogs often presents with persistent lameness due to progressive cartilage breakdown and chronic inflammation within affected joints, causing ongoing pain and reluctance to bear weight normally. The lameness may fluctuate in severity but typically becomes a consistent feature as the condition advances.
Cruciate Ligament Disease in Dogs
Cruciate ligament disease causes persistent lameness through knee joint instability and pain following ligament damage, which can occur suddenly or develop gradually. The affected limb often bears reduced weight during both rest and activity as the joint remains mechanically compromised.
Hip Dysplasia in Dogs
Hip dysplasia produces persistent lameness as the abnormally formed hip joint experiences ongoing instability and progressive cartilage wear, leading to chronic discomfort during weight-bearing. The lameness may be present from a young age or develop over time as secondary arthritic changes accumulate.
Osteosarcoma
Osteosarcoma, an aggressive bone cancer, typically causes progressive and persistent lameness as the tumour erodes healthy bone tissue and triggers inflammation within the affected limb. The lameness tends to worsen over weeks and often does not respond to rest or routine pain management.
Osteochondritis Dissecans (OCD)
Osteochondritis dissecans can cause persistent lameness in young, growing dogs when abnormal cartilage development creates loose fragments within joints, particularly affecting the shoulder, elbow, or stifle. The lameness may be present continuously or worsen following exercise as the damaged cartilage surface fails to function smoothly.
Synovial Cell Sarcoma
As the tumour enlarges and invades surrounding tissue, it can cause a lameness that persists rather than resolving with rest.
