Productive cough

Owners may observe productive cough in their pet.

This symptom can occur in multiple conditions and warrants further assessment.

Airway Infection and Pneumonia

Bacterial, viral or fungal infection of the lower airways, or inhalation of vomit or food material, triggers inflammation and fluid or pus accumulation within the lungs. This produces a moist, productive cough often paired with lethargy, reduced appetite and sometimes a raised temperature. In dogs it can follow an untreated case of infectious tracheobronchitis (kennel cough); aspiration pneumonia is a recognised pattern after vomiting, regurgitation or anaesthesia.

Congestive Heart Failure (Cardiogenic Pulmonary Oedema)

Left-sided heart disease allows fluid to leak from the pulmonary vessels into the lung tissue, producing a soft, moist cough that tends to worsen at night or after exertion. This pattern is well recognised in dogs, where dilated cardiomyopathy predisposes larger breeds such as Dobermanns, Great Danes and Boxers. Cats are different: even with significant heart disease, including hypertrophic cardiomyopathy in Maine Coon, Ragdoll and British Shorthair cats, coughing is an uncommon sign, and rapid or laboured breathing is far more typical. A coughing cat should not be assumed to have a cardiac cause without other supporting findings.

Chronic and Allergic Airway Inflammation

Longstanding, non-infectious inflammation thickens the bronchial lining and increases mucus production, generating an intermittent productive cough that can persist for months without other signs of illness. In cats this pattern is typically allergic (feline asthma/chronic bronchitis), reported more often in young to middle-aged cats and Siamese-type breeds. In dogs it is more common in middle-aged and older small breeds, including terriers, and is unrelated to any active infection.

Lungworm and Airway Parasites

Larvae of Angiostrongylus vasorum, picked up by dogs that ingest slugs, snails or contaminated grass, migrate to the lungs and provoke coughing alongside increased respiratory effort; this parasite has an expanding distribution across the UK and is most often diagnosed in young dogs with garden access. Cats can be affected by the related lungworm Aelurostrongylus abstrusus, acquired via infected rodents or birds, producing a similar pattern of persistent, wet coughing.
