Reduced or absent defecation

Owners may observe reduced or absent defecation in their pet.

Dehydration and Dietary Factors

Insufficient water intake, a predominantly dry diet, or ingestion of fur during grooming allows the colon to reabsorb excess moisture from faecal material, leaving it dry, hard and difficult to pass. This mechanism is common in cats that drink little, particularly those eating dry food exclusively, and tends to build gradually rather than appear suddenly.

Environmental and Behavioural Avoidance

Cats will often delay or avoid defecation in response to a soiled litter tray, an unfamiliar or exposed tray location, competition in a multi-cat household, or recent changes to the home environment. This voluntary retention allows stool to sit longer in the colon, where it becomes progressively drier and harder, and reflects a normal behavioural response rather than a sign of underlying disease.

Megacolon and Colonic Motility Disorder

Repeated cycles of retained, hardened faeces can stretch the colon wall and weaken its ability to contract, a process that becomes self-perpetuating once established; many cases have no identifiable trigger and are termed idiopathic. This pattern is seen more often in middle-aged and older cats and tends to progress gradually from occasional straining to a near-total absence of bowel movements.

Pelvic Narrowing or Nerve-Related Obstruction

A poorly healed pelvic fracture from a previous injury can physically narrow the pelvic canal, mechanically obstructing the passage of stool despite normal colon function. Separately, disruption to the nerve supply of the colon and rectum, from lower spinal cord or sacral nerve dysfunction, reduces the coordinated contractions needed for normal defecation.

Conditions commonly associated

Constipation and Megacolon

Decreased frequency of bowel movements, sometimes going several days without passing faeces, is characteristic.

Megaoesophagus

Megaoesophagus involves loss of normal muscular function in the oesophagus, which can lead to food accumulating rather than passing to the stomach; owners may observe reduced defecation as a consequence of reduced food intake or the animal's inability to deliver nutrients to the digestive tract.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease in Dogs

Inflammatory bowel disease involves chronic inflammation of the digestive tract, which can alter gut motility and cause constipation in some dogs; reduced defecation may occur alongside other gastrointestinal signs such as altered appetite or intermittent diarrhoea.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease in Cats

Inflammatory bowel disease in cats involves chronic gastrointestinal inflammation that can disrupt normal intestinal transit; whilst diarrhoea is more commonly observed, some cats may experience reduced defecation due to altered motility or discomfort affecting the lower digestive tract.

Degenerative Myelopathy in Dogs

Degenerative myelopathy causes progressive loss of coordination and strength in the hind legs due to spinal cord degeneration; in later stages, the neurological changes can impair the posturing and muscle control needed for normal defecation.

Pemphigus

Pemphigus involves autoimmune attack on skin cell connections, and when lesions affect the perianal region or cause generalised discomfort and systemic illness, dogs may be reluctant to adopt the posture needed for defecation or may have reduced appetite affecting stool production.
