Sensitivity around the neck
Owners typically describe the pet flinching, ducking away, or vocalising when the collar area or scruff is touched, resisting attempts to fasten a collar or harness, or holding the head low and stiff rather than turning freely to look around.
Cervical Disc Disease
Degeneration or protrusion of an intervertebral disc in the neck places pressure on nearby nerve roots or the spinal cord itself, producing pain that is reproducible on neck extension, flexion, or direct palpation. Chondrodystrophic dog breeds carry an increased predisposition, and cats can also develop clinically significant cervical disc disease, albeit less commonly recognised.
Inflammatory Spinal Disease
Inflammation of the meninges surrounding the spinal cord, most often affecting young dogs under two years old, produces a hallmark presentation of severe, generalised spinal pain that is frequently most obvious in the neck. Affected dogs often hold the head low and stiff, resist collar contact, and may run a low-grade temperature.
Structural Cervical Instability
Vertebral malformation or instability that narrows the spinal canal in the neck of large and giant breeds is a recognised cause of chronic cervical pain. Alongside a wobbly hind-limb gait, affected dogs commonly show a lowered head carriage and resistance to having the neck manipulated.
Generalised Touch Hypersensitivity
An exaggerated neurological response to touch is centred on the lower back and tail base in cats; the scruff and neck are not typical sites, so sensitivity confined to this area alone points away from this pattern rather than toward it. Episodes may include rippling skin, dilated pupils, and a sudden change in demeanour when the sensitive area is contacted.
Referred Ear or Dental Pain
Painful ear canal disease or dental disease can make a dog or cat resist any handling around the head, and this guarding is sometimes read by owners as neck-specific sensitivity rather than its true source. Head shaking, odour, pawing at the face, or reduced interest in hard food help distinguish a referred source from a primary cervical one.
Vertebral Infection
Infection centred on an intervertebral disc space and the adjacent vertebral endplates can localise to the cervical spine and produce marked, well-defined pain on palpation. It is often accompanied by systemic signs such as reduced appetite, lethargy, or an intermittent raised temperature.
Bite Wound or Localised Infection
In cats particularly, a puncture wound from a fight can seed infection under the skin of the neck or scruff, producing focal swelling, warmth, and marked sensitivity over the site rather than diffuse spinal pain. This is one of the more common causes of sudden neck sensitivity in cats and typically develops over one to a few days following an unwitnessed altercation.
Why timing matters
Early observation
In its earliest form, neck sensitivity may appear only during specific handling, such as collar fastening, grooming around the scruff, or being lifted, without any visible change to posture or movement, making it easy to attribute to a passing mood.
Later presentation
As an underlying process progresses, sensitivity tends to generalise: the head is held lower or more rigidly at rest, turning the neck to look sideways is avoided, and the pet may resist being picked up or having the collar area touched under any circumstance.
Because inflammatory and infectious causes of cervical pain can escalate over days, while degenerative causes typically build over months, the speed of change is a useful piece of contextual information alongside the sensitivity itself.
Conditions commonly associated
Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD)
Disc material protruding into the cervical spinal canal can irritate nerve roots or the cord itself, producing pain on neck movement or palpation.
Steroid-Responsive Meningitis-Arteritis (SRMA)
An inflammatory disease of the meninges typically affecting young dogs, producing marked cervical pain often with a raised temperature and lethargy.
Wobbler Syndrome (Cervical Spondylomyelopathy)
Vertebral malformation or instability in large and giant breeds compresses the cervical spinal cord and is a classic cause of neck pain with a lowered head carriage.
Feline Hyperesthesia Syndrome
Heightened skin and neural sensitivity, most often along the back but sometimes extending to the neck, produces an exaggerated reaction to touch.
Otitis Externa in Dogs
Ear canal inflammation can cause a dog to resist handling around the head and neck in a way that mimics primary cervical pain.
Discospondylitis
Infection centred on an intervertebral disc and adjacent vertebral endplates produces localised spinal pain that, when cervical, presents as neck sensitivity.
Dental Disease in Dogs
Oral pain can be associated with resistance to head and neck handling, occasionally mistaken for primary cervical sensitivity.
Mosquito Bite Hypersensitivity in Cats
Mosquito bites trigger an exaggerated allergic reaction to proteins in the saliva, producing itchy, inflamed papules and crusted lesions on thinly-furred areas such as the neck and ears; the resulting inflammation makes these areas tender and sensitive to touch.
When to explore further
Neck sensitivity in a young, large-breed dog with a sudden onset, a raised temperature, or reluctance to lower the head to eat may reflect an inflammatory process rather than a simple muscular strain, and this age and breed pattern is worth noting.
When sensitivity is accompanied by a change in gait, such as wobbliness, crossing of the limbs, or scuffing, particularly in a giant-breed dog, a structural cervical origin becomes more plausible and may benefit from imaging-based characterisation.
In cats, sensitivity confined to the neck alongside excessive grooming, rippling skin along the back, or sudden bursts of activity may reflect a broader hyperesthesia picture rather than a localised injury.
Sensitivity that appears only when the ear is approached, or is paired with head shaking, odour, or discharge, may have an otic rather than spinal origin.
Neck sensitivity that persists or worsens over more than a few days, especially alongside reduced appetite or lethargy, sits outside a simple muscular strain and may warrant closer characterisation.
Noting exactly which movements or touches trigger the reaction, such as collar fastening, scruff contact, looking upward, or being picked up, helps map the pattern more precisely than a general description. A brief video of the pet's resting head and neck posture, along with any reluctance to turn the head fully to one side, adds objective detail. Tracking whether sensitivity is constant, intermittent, or linked to specific activities over a week or two provides useful context for characterising the pattern.
