Slipping or splaying on smooth floors
Owners often notice the back feet sliding out sideways when the dog turns a corner on tiled, laminate, or wood flooring, sometimes with a wide, splayed stance used to steady itself, or a moment of hesitation before crossing an open expanse of smooth floor.
Joint and Orthopaedic Change
Osteoarthritis and hip dysplasia reduce the smooth mechanical function of the hip, stifle, or elbow joints, so the hind end no longer drives forward with full confidence. On a low-friction surface this shows as splaying, sliding, or a wide stance used to spread weight across a larger base. Signs are often most obvious first thing in the morning or after a period of rest.
Neuromuscular and Proprioceptive Decline
Degenerative myelopathy progressively affects the spinal cord pathways that carry position sense from the hind paws to the brain, so the dog no longer registers exactly where each foot has landed. This tends to appear first as scuffed nails and knuckling, worsening into more obvious slipping specifically on smooth flooring where the sensory feedback from paw contact is reduced.
Vestibular Disturbance
Vestibular disease disrupts the balance signals arising from the inner ear or brainstem, producing a wide-based, uncertain gait that is exaggerated wherever traction is limited. It is often accompanied by a head tilt, circling, or abnormal eye movements, and can develop suddenly in older dogs.
Cognitive Decline
Canine cognitive dysfunction alters spatial awareness and gait planning as well as memory, and reflective or unfamiliar-feeling surfaces can become disproportionately unsettling for an affected dog. Hesitation before crossing an open floor, alongside other behavioural changes such as disrupted sleep patterns, often accompanies the physical slipping.
Age-Related Muscle Loss
Gradual loss of muscle mass and strength that accompanies ageing reduces the stabilising power available to the hindquarters, particularly around the hips and lower back. Without sufficient muscular support, a dog's ability to correct for the reduced grip of a smooth floor is diminished, even in the absence of joint or neurological disease.
Normal Variation
In an otherwise well dog, particularly a younger one, occasional slipping on a smooth floor often simply reflects unfamiliarity with the surface, longer fur between the paw pads reducing grip, or a freshly cleaned or polished floor, without any underlying joint, muscular, or neurological change.
Why timing matters
Early observation
In early stages, slipping tends to be occasional and situational, limited to certain floor types or the period after exercise, without accompanying overt lameness; it often reflects subtle loss of confidence or minor proprioceptive lag rather than established joint or spinal cord disease.
Later presentation
As an underlying process advances, slipping becomes more frequent, occurs on a wider range of surfaces including carpet, and is joined by more overt signs such as muscle wasting over the hindquarters, dragging of the hind paws, or difficulty rising.
Because conditions such as osteoarthritis and degenerative myelopathy typically progress over months rather than days, the rate of change, stable for a long period versus worsening over weeks, tends to carry more diagnostic weight than any single slipping episode.

When to explore further
Slipping that has developed gradually in a middle-aged or senior dog, particularly alongside stiffness after rest or reluctance to jump into the car, may benefit from orthopaedic characterisation rather than being attributed to flooring alone.
When splaying is paired with scuffed or worn nails on the hind feet, an uneven gait, or dragging of a paw, a neurological assessment can add useful context, since these findings often precede more obvious weakness.
A large or giant-breed dog showing neck discomfort, a lowered head carriage, or reluctance to turn the head alongside hind-end slipping may reflect a cervical origin rather than a purely hind-limb one.
Slipping accompanied by disorientation, circling, or a head tilt sits outside typical age-related change and may warrant characterisation through a vestibular-focused assessment.
In older dogs, slipping that coincides with other behavioural shifts, such as disrupted sleep-wake patterns, house-training lapses, or reduced responsiveness, may reflect a broader cognitive picture rather than a purely mechanical one.
A short video clip of the dog walking and turning on the smooth floor, taken from behind, can capture footfall pattern and paw placement more accurately than memory alone. Noting whether slipping happens on all smooth surfaces or only in specific rooms, and whether it is worse first thing in the morning, after rest, or after exercise, adds useful pattern information. A simple log of frequency over a few weeks, alongside any accompanying stiffness, reluctance to jump, or changes in nail wear, helps distinguish a stable pattern from a progressive one.
