Cold paws or ears

Owners notice the paws, ear tips, or nose feeling notably cool to the touch compared with the rest of the body, sometimes alongside pale or bluish gums or pads, reduced enthusiasm for activity, or, in cats, sudden reluctance to bear weight on hind legs that also feel cold.

Normal Peripheral Variation

Ears, paw pads, and the nose have comparatively little insulating fat and a high surface-area-to-volume ratio, so they cool and warm more readily than the trunk in response to ambient temperature, recent activity, or simply lying still. This is a common and usually unremarkable finding, particularly in cool weather or shortly after a walk or bath.

Reduced Cardiac Output

When the heart's forward output is reduced, less warmed blood reaches the periphery, and paws, ears, and the tail are typically among the first areas to feel the effect. This tends to develop gradually and is usually accompanied by other signs such as reduced stamina or an altered breathing pattern.

Arterial Obstruction (Cats)

A blood clot lodging in the terminal aorta, most often arising from underlying heart disease, abruptly cuts blood supply to one or both hind limbs. This produces cold, sometimes painful hind paws alongside sudden weakness or loss of the ability to bear weight, a distinctly different pattern from generalised peripheral coolness.

Metabolic Slowing

A lowered metabolic rate reduces heat generation and can leave the extremities persistently cool even in a warm environment. This usually develops alongside other signs such as weight gain, coat thinning, or lethargy rather than appearing in isolation.

Anaemia

A significant reduction in circulating red blood cells lowers the blood's oxygen-carrying capacity and prompts the body to preferentially direct blood flow toward core organs. Peripheral tissues, including the paws and ears, can feel cool as a result of this redirection.

Adrenal Insufficiency

Impaired regulation of blood pressure and fluid balance can reduce peripheral perfusion, leaving paws and ears cool to the touch. This is typically accompanied by more general, often vague signs such as lethargy, reduced appetite, or intermittent gastrointestinal upset.

Reduced Circulating Volume or Widespread Vasoconstriction

Significant fluid loss from prolonged vomiting or diarrhoea, blood loss, or a body-wide response to severe illness or injury redirects blood away from the extremities to protect core organs, and cold paws or ears can be an early sign of this redirection. When this develops alongside weakness, rapid breathing, pale gums, or reluctance to rise, it reflects a markedly different pattern from ordinary peripheral coolness.

Why timing matters

Early observation

Occasional coolness of the ear tips or paw pads, particularly in cold weather, after a bath, or when a pet has been resting rather than moving, is a common and usually unremarkable finding reflecting normal peripheral blood flow patterns.

Later presentation

Coldness that is persistent regardless of ambient temperature or activity, that affects multiple extremities simultaneously, or that develops suddenly alongside pain or loss of limb function represents a different category of finding tied to circulation or systemic perfusion.

Because reduced perfusion from cardiac causes tends to build gradually over weeks in dogs but can present abruptly in cats when a clot obstructs blood flow, the speed of onset and whether the change is generalised or confined to one limb both carry diagnostic relevance.

Conditions commonly associated

Aortic Thromboembolism in Cats

A clot lodging in the terminal aorta abruptly cuts blood supply to the hind limbs, producing cold, often painful paws alongside sudden loss of hind-limb function.

Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy in Cats

The heart disease most commonly underlying feline aortic thromboembolism, predisposing to clot formation that leads to cold extremities.

Congestive Heart Failure in Dogs

Reduced forward blood flow lowers perfusion to peripheral tissue, with paws and ears among the first areas to feel the effect.

Mitral Valve Disease in Dogs

Progressive valve degeneration reduces cardiac output over time, contributing to persistently cool extremities in affected dogs.

Dilated Cardiomyopathy in Dogs

Impaired heart muscle contraction reduces the volume of blood reaching peripheral tissue, cooling the paws and ears.

Hypothyroidism in Dogs

A lowered metabolic rate reduces heat generation and can leave extremities persistently cool alongside other signs such as weight gain and lethargy.

Immune-Mediated Haemolytic Anaemia (IMHA)

Reduced oxygen-carrying capacity, combined with the body's redirection of blood flow toward core organs, can leave extremities notably cool.

Addisons Disease in Dogs

Adrenal insufficiency can impair blood pressure regulation, reducing peripheral perfusion and leaving paws and ears cool to the touch.

Pericardial Effusion

Fluid accumulation around the heart restricts its ability to fill and pump effectively, reducing peripheral perfusion in a manner similar to other cardiac causes.

When to explore further

Cold paws that are limited to cool weather or follow time outdoors, and that warm again once the pet is indoors and active, most often reflect ordinary peripheral circulation rather than an underlying process.

In cats, sudden coldness of one or both hind paws together with vocalisation, dragging of the limb, or reluctance to bear weight is a distinct pattern from generalised coolness and reflects a different underlying mechanism.

Coldness affecting the ears, paws, and tail together, alongside reduced energy, laboured breathing, or reluctance to lie on one side, may relate to reduced cardiac output rather than ambient temperature.

Persistent cold extremities in a dog also showing weight gain, coat thinning, or lethargy may fit a broader metabolic pattern rather than a standalone finding.

Pale or bluish gums accompanying cold paws or ears extend the finding beyond simple peripheral coolness and add useful diagnostic weight, and this combination alongside weakness, rapid breathing, or reluctance to rise or stand reflects a distinctly different, more pressing pattern than coolness on its own.

Comparing paw and ear temperature against the trunk at a consistent time of day, rather than only when a change is first noticed, helps establish whether coolness is a new or longstanding pattern. Noting whether coldness resolves with warming and activity, or persists regardless, along with the pet's overall energy and appetite over the same period, adds useful context. In cats particularly, observing whether both hind paws are affected equally and whether weight-bearing or gait has changed provides information that is more useful than temperature alone.
