Poor coat condition
Owners may observe poor coat condition in their pet, which can present in various ways depending on the underlying cause.
Nutritional
Deficiencies in protein, essential fatty acids, or specific vitamins and minerals can alter hair growth cycles and compromise the structural integrity of the coat. Poor-quality diet, malabsorption, or conditions affecting nutrient uptake may produce similar changes.
Dermatological
Skin conditions such as allergic disease, parasitic infestations, bacterial or fungal infections, and immune-mediated disorders often alter coat quality through inflammation, pruritus, or disrupted hair follicle function. The coat may appear dull, patchy, or greasy depending on the underlying process.
Endocrine
Hormonal imbalances affecting the thyroid, adrenal glands, or reproductive organs can slow hair growth, delay shedding, or change coat texture and distribution. These changes tend to be symmetrical and progressive, reflecting systemic metabolic shifts.
Hepatic and renal
Chronic liver or kidney disease may compromise the body's ability to process nutrients, eliminate waste products, or maintain fluid balance, all of which can manifest in coat quality before other signs become apparent. The coat may appear dull, dry, or brittle.
Behavioural and pain-related
Animals experiencing chronic discomfort, stress, or mobility limitations may reduce grooming behaviour, leading to matting, dullness, or an unkempt appearance. In cats particularly, coat condition often reflects their ability and willingness to groom.
Systemic and inflammatory
Chronic infections, neoplastic processes, or inflammatory conditions can redirect metabolic resources away from maintaining coat quality. Generalised illness often appears in the coat before other clinical signs become overt.
Why timing matters
Early observation
When poor coat condition first appears, it may reflect a recent dietary change, seasonal variation, or a mild, self-limiting process. In some cases, early changes can signal the onset of a more persistent condition, but individual variation in coat quality is common and not always clinically significant. The presence or absence of other signs often helps clarify whether the change warrants closer attention.
Later presentation
If coat quality fails to improve or continues to decline over weeks to months, the likelihood increases that an underlying systemic, metabolic, or chronic dermatological process is present. Persistence suggests that the body's capacity to maintain normal hair growth and skin health may be compromised. Patterns that evolve—such as hair loss in specific distributions, changes in pigmentation, or the development of skin lesions—tend to narrow the range of possible explanations.
Coat changes can evolve gradually or appear suddenly, depending on the underlying cause. Endocrine and nutritional processes tend to develop slowly and symmetrically, whilst infectious or allergic conditions may fluctuate or worsen with environmental exposure. Individual animals vary in how quickly their coat reflects internal health, and some breeds or coat types mask early changes more effectively than others.

Hypothyroidism in Dogs
Hypothyroidism often causes changes to coat quality because thyroid hormone influences hair growth cycles and the function of sebaceous glands. The coat may become dry, dull, brittle, or thin, and in many cases the hair regrows slowly after shedding.
Cushings Disease in Dogs
Cushing's disease can alter coat texture and appearance through sustained excess cortisol, which affects skin thickness, hair follicle cycling, and sebum production. The coat may become thin, lacklustre, or patchy, and some dogs develop a pot-bellied appearance alongside coat changes.
Sebaceous Adenitis
Sebaceous adenitis involves immune-mediated destruction of the glands that produce oils to keep the coat supple. As these glands are lost, the coat becomes dry, dull, and prone to scaling, with hair often breaking or shedding more readily than usual.
Liver Disease in Dogs
Liver disease can affect coat condition through multiple pathways, including altered protein synthesis, impaired nutrient processing, and accumulation of toxins that would normally be cleared. The coat may appear dull, dry, or unkempt as the body's metabolic balance shifts.
Colour Dilution Alopecia
Colour dilution alopecia involves a structural abnormality in the hair shaft itself in dogs with dilute coat colours, leading to hair that is fragile and prone to breaking. Affected areas tend to show thinning, a moth-eaten appearance, and a dull or brittle texture that differs from the normal coat.
When to explore further
If the change persists beyond several weeks despite no recent alterations in diet, environment, or routine grooming practices.
If poor coat condition appears alongside weight loss, increased thirst or urination, changes in appetite, lethargy, or behavioural shifts.
If the coat deterioration is accompanied by visible skin changes such as redness, scaling, odour, hair loss in patches, or evidence of scratching or discomfort.
If grooming behaviour has noticeably decreased, particularly in cats, or if the animal appears reluctant to move or perform activities it previously managed comfortably.
If the coat change is symmetrical, progressive, or affects areas the animal cannot easily reach, suggesting a systemic rather than localised process.
Poor coat condition gains meaning when considered alongside other observations: changes in behaviour, appetite, weight, or energy, as well as the animal's age, breed, and history. Patterns that persist or evolve tend to warrant a closer look, particularly when multiple systems appear affected. This is the sort of picture that benefits from being discussed in context with someone familiar with the individual animal and able to examine the skin, coat, and overall health in detail.
