Sudden irritability or aggression
The owner notices a dog or cat that previously tolerated handling, other animals, or routine interactions now growls, snaps, hisses, or reacts defensively, often in specific contexts such as being touched, lifted, or approached while resting.
Musculoskeletal Pain
Osteoarthritis in dogs and arthritis in cats commonly present with irritability rather than obvious lameness, particularly in cats, where pain is often under-recognised. A reaction on being lifted, groomed, or having a specific joint handled may reflect localised discomfort rather than a change in temperament.
Cognitive Decline

Early observation
An early, occasional reaction confined to a specific, identifiable trigger, such as touching a particular joint or lifting the pet in a certain way, often points toward a discrete, localisable source of discomfort. At this stage the reaction is usually predictable and limited to that one context. It may also reflect a single uncomfortable experience rather than an ongoing process.
Later presentation
A pattern that has become more frequent, less predictable, or generalised across contexts and handlers may suggest an evolving underlying process, such as progressive joint disease or a developing cognitive change. Reactions extending to previously well-tolerated situations represent a meaningful shift from an earlier, more contained pattern. This broadening is often more informative than the presence of irritability alone.
Comparing the frequency, specificity, and intensity of episodes over several weeks provides a more objective picture than reacting to a single incident. A stable, trigger-specific pattern differs meaningfully from one that is spreading to new contexts or intensifying in severity. Tracking any accompanying changes in mobility, appetite, or sleep alongside the behavioural pattern over the same period helps place the irritability in a wider context.

Irritability appearing for the first time in an older pet, particularly alongside disorientation, altered sleep patterns, or house-training lapses, may reflect a cognitive or sensory change rather than a purely behavioural shift.
A sudden change in a previously placid cat, especially alongside weight loss or an increased appetite, may benefit from being considered alongside other systemic signs rather than in isolation.
Reactivity that escalates in frequency or intensity over a short period, rather than remaining stable, adds useful information about whether an underlying driver is progressing.
Aggression directed at a specific individual, animal, or situation only may differ meaningfully in origin from irritability that occurs more generally across contexts.
Keeping a simple log of when reactions occur, including the time of day, what preceded the event, and which body area if any was being handled, can add useful pattern information. A short video of an episode, taken safely from a distance, may capture posture and context more objectively than memory alone. Noting any accompanying changes such as appetite, sleep, or mobility over the same period helps place the behaviour within a wider picture.
